Gravedona Weekly Market (Mercato Settimanale)

Every Wednesday morning the streets of Gravedona fill with stalls selling everything from Valchiavenna cheeses to Lombard salumi, garden vegetables and cheap linen shirts — a slice of authentic northern lake life that tourists on the Bellagio circuit rarely encounter.

What to Buy and Taste

Head straight for the food stalls first: look for sciatt (buckwheat fritters stuffed with local Bitto or Casera cheese), bresaola from the Valtellina, and honey from mountain beekeepers who set up a small stand near the church end of the market.

Local olive oil from the lower lake is sometimes sold here too — the northern lake is near the climatic limit for olives, which makes this oil a genuine curiosity worth buying.

For non-food souvenirs, woven baskets, ceramic tableware and practical linen are all reasonably priced compared with the tourist shops of Varenna or Como city.

Timing and Etiquette

Stalls set up from around 8 a.m. and the best produce goes fast; arrive before 9:30 a.m. if you want the pick of the cheeses and charcuterie.

Bargaining is not standard Italian market etiquette — a friendly buongiorno and genuine interest in the product will get you much further than haggling.

The market wraps up by early afternoon, so combine it with a lakefront espresso at one of the bars on Via Regina and watch the ferries glide past.
