Ristorante La Fagurida, Gravedona
Tucked into the hills above Gravedona, La Fagurida is the kind of family-run trattoria that regulars guard jealously — rustic wooden interiors, a terrace with lake glimpses, and a menu anchored in the cucina of the Alto Lario and Valtellina valleys.
What to Order
Start with a board of local affettati — thin-sliced bresaola, lardo di Colonnata, and Bitto stagionato — paired with a glass of Valtellina Superiore Sassella, a Nebbiolo-based red that punches well above its fame.
The primo of pizzoccheri (buckwheat pasta with savoy cabbage, potatoes and melted Casera cheese) is a regional institution; La Fagurida's version is properly butter-rich and worth every calorie after a morning hike.
For secondo, grilled freshwater fish — typically lavarello (lake whitefish) or persico (perch) — arrives simply dressed with lemon and local olive oil, letting the quality of the ingredient speak.
Atmosphere and Booking
The dining room feels like a mountain rifugio crossed with a grandmother's kitchen: low ceilings, exposed stone, mismatched crockery that somehow works perfectly.
Weekend lunches fill up fast with Italian families from Como and Milan — booking ahead by phone is strongly advised, especially in July and August.
Service is warm but unhurried; this is not a place to rush. Order a digestivo of Braulio amaro and let the afternoon dissolve.
