Marché Provençal de Grasse
Every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday morning, the Cours Honoré Cresp fills with stalls piled high with violet artichokes, tapenade in terracotta pots, local honey, and bundles of dried lavender that perfume the whole street. This is the most authentic farmers' market on the inland Côte d'Azur.
What to Buy
Look for socca (chickpea flatbread) cooked on a wood-fired iron pan at the far end of the market — the vendor near the fountain has been there for decades and charges just a couple of euros for a crisp, golden portion.
The olive oil producers from the Alpes-Maritimes hinterland set up tasting tables where you can dip bread into single-estate oils pressed from Cailletier olives; bottles make the best possible edible souvenir and travel well in checked luggage.
Timing and Atmosphere
Arrive before 9:00 to see the stalls at their fullest and to catch the light falling across the plane trees — by 11:30 the best produce is gone and the crowds are thick.
Saturday is the largest and liveliest market day, when flower growers from the surrounding villages bring centifolia roses in spring and tuberose in late summer, the very blooms destined for the perfume houses.
