Domaine de Manon Jasmine Fields
Every September, the hillside fields around the Domaine de Manon near Plascassier — a hamlet just east of Grasse — turn white with Jasminum grandiflorum blossoms that must be hand-picked before 10 h before the heat destroys their scent. The domaine opens its harvest to visitors for a few precious weeks, making this the most sensory experience in all of Provence.
The jasmine harvest experience
Owner Carole Biancalana runs harvest mornings where you join the pickers in the field at 7 h, learn to snap the flowers correctly (thumb and forefinger, never pull), and fill a wicker basket alongside the seasonal workers who have been doing this for decades. Within an hour your hands smell of the most expensive raw material in perfumery.
After picking, Carole demonstrates the enfleurage process in the on-site workshop — the ancient cold-fat extraction method that Grasse perfumers used before steam distillation — and explains why a single kilogram of jasmine absolute requires roughly 7.5 million hand-picked flowers and costs more than gold by weight.
Planning your visit
The jasmine harvest runs from late August to mid-October, peaking in the first two weeks of September. The domaine also cultivates May rose (Rosa centifolia) harvested in May and tuberose in August, so there are three separate floral windows if jasmine timing doesn't work for your trip.
Book directly via the Domaine de Manon website; group sizes are kept small (maximum 12 people) to preserve the intimacy of the experience. The domaine is in Plascassier, reachable in 15 minutes by car from central Grasse on the D2085.
