Vallée des Espécières Snowshoe Trail
When summer hikers have gone home, the valley above Gavarnie becomes a hushed white world best explored on snowshoes. The Vallée des Espécières loop, starting from the village, threads through beech forest and open pasture with the cirque's icy ramparts glowing pink at dusk.
The Route
The marked snowshoe circuit runs approximately 7 km and begins at the Gavarnie tourist office, following the summer mule path before branching left into the forest above the Gave de Gavarnie river. Signage is clear and the gradient gentle enough for beginners.
In deep winter the beech trees carry heavy snow on their branches, creating natural tunnels of white that block out all sound except the creak of your snowshoes and the occasional crack of a branch overhead.
Wildlife in Winter
Isard — the Pyrenean chamois — are far easier to spot in winter when they descend to lower elevations. Look for their neat hoof prints crossing the trail and scan the rocky outcrops above the treeline with binoculars at dawn.
Griffon vultures and the occasional lammergeier (bearded vulture) ride thermals above the cirque even in January; the lammergeier's rusty-orange chest and diamond-shaped tail are unmistakable against the white cliffs.
Gear and Guides
Snowshoe rental is available from the Bureau des Guides de Gavarnie in the village centre for around €12 per day, and guided half-day tours depart most winter mornings when conditions allow.
The tourist office (Office de Tourisme de Gavarnie-Gèdre) maintains a daily snow and trail conditions board; always check it before heading out, as avalanche risk in the upper valley can be elevated after heavy snowfall.
