Lac de Pailla & the Vallée d'Ossoue
While every visitor funnels toward the cirque, the Vallée d'Ossoue to the north-west of Gavarnie hides a quieter world of glacial lakes, ibex and the approach to the Vignemale — the highest summit entirely on French soil. The small Lac de Pailla is a perfect half-day escape.
Finding the Valley
Drive or cycle the D923 from Gèdre (the village just north of Gavarnie) into the Ossoue valley, following the Gave d'Ossoue river upstream. The road ends at the Barrage d'Ossoue dam, a concrete arc holding back a reservoir that mirrors the Vignemale's glaciated north face on calm mornings.
From the dam, a path climbs south through boulder-strewn pasture to the Lac de Pailla at around 2,100 metres. The lake is small, green-tinged and often completely deserted on weekdays — a stark contrast to the busy cirque trail just one ridge away.
Wildlife and Onward Options
The Ossoue valley holds one of the densest ibex populations in the French Pyrenees; scan the rocky outcrops above the lake with binoculars and you will almost certainly spot a herd. Griffon vultures and the occasional bearded vulture (lammergeier) cruise the thermals above the Vignemale's north face.
Strong walkers can continue from the lake to the Refuge des Oulettes de Gaube (2,151 m), a staffed CAF hut with extraordinary face-on views of the Vignemale glacier. This extends the day to a full 18-kilometre round trip from the dam — or you can split it with a night at the refuge.
