La Rambla and the Old Town Core
Figueres' Rambla is a wide, tree-lined promenade that forms the social backbone of the city — shaded by plane trees, lined with café terraces and bookended by the market on one side and the Dalí Museum on the other. It is where local life unfolds at its most unhurried and authentic.
A Promenade Worth Slowing Down For
The Rambla's iron benches fill with retirees playing cards in the morning and families with pushchairs in the early evening — the passeig (evening stroll) is still a genuine daily ritual here, not a tourist performance. The café Cafè de la Rambla has been serving horchata and granissats under the same awning for decades.
Branching off the Rambla, the pedestrian streets of the old town — Carrer de la Jonquera, Carrer Ample and the lanes around the 18th-century Església de Sant Pere — hide independent bookshops, small wine bars and the occasional art gallery showing local Empordà artists.
Plaça de l'Ajuntament and Beyond
The handsome neoclassical town hall on Plaça de l'Ajuntament anchors the civic heart of the old town. The square hosts a small Christmas market in December and a Sant Jordi book-and-roses fair on 23 April that is one of the most charming local celebrations in the province.
A short detour to Carrer de Peralada leads to some of the best-preserved 19th-century merchant townhouses in the city, their stone doorways carved with the coats of arms of prosperous Empordà trading families. It takes ten minutes and rewards the curious.
