Museu del Joguet de Catalunya
Hidden inside the ornate 19th-century Hotel de Paris on the Rambla, the Museu del Joguet de Catalunya is one of the most charming and least-crowded museums in all of Catalonia. Over 4,000 toys — many of them antique Catalan and Spanish pieces — are displayed across beautifully restored rooms, and the collection includes toys that once belonged to Salvador Dalí and Federico García Lorca.
The Collection
The museum traces Catalan toy-making from the mid-19th century through the post-war years, when Barcelona was one of Europe's leading centres of tin-toy production. Mechanical banks, hand-painted wooden animals, early celluloid dolls and elaborate puppet theatres fill the cases with an almost overwhelming nostalgic beauty.
A dedicated section explores how toys reflect social history — the shift from hand-crafted wooden pieces to mass-produced tin and eventually plastic tells the story of industrialisation in miniature. It sounds dry; in practice it is utterly absorbing.
Why It Rewards a Visit
The museum is rarely crowded even in peak summer, making it a wonderful retreat from the midday heat when the Dalí Museum queues are at their longest. Allow 60 to 90 minutes and you will leave having seen something genuinely unexpected.
The gift shop stocks beautifully designed reproductions of classic Catalan toys — a painted wooden Caga Tió log, a set of gegants finger puppets — that make far more original souvenirs than anything sold near the Dalí Museum entrance.
