What to See and When
The reserve is divided into two main areas: the Estany de Vilaut in the north and the larger southern section around El Cortalet, where the visitor centre is located. The El Cortalet area has a network of well-marked trails ranging from a flat 2 km loop to a 7 km circuit that takes you through every habitat type the reserve contains.
Spring (April–May) is the peak season for breeding birds and wildflower meadows; autumn (September–October) brings the spectacle of mass migration. Even in midsummer the reserve is productive — the flamingos are present from late spring through early autumn, and the lagoon hides and observation towers bring you within extraordinary close range.
Getting There and Practical Tips
The reserve is most easily reached by car from Figueres — take the GI-623 road towards Castelló d'Empúries and follow signs to El Cortalet. The drive takes around 25 minutes and passes through the handsome medieval village of Castelló d'Empúries, worth a brief stop for its Gothic collegiate church.
Binoculars are essential; the visitor centre at El Cortalet lends them free of charge to visitors, which is a genuinely useful service. Early morning visits before 9 am offer the best light for photography and the greatest bird activity.
