Dalí Theatre-Museum
The most visited museum in Spain after the Prado, the Dalí Theatre-Museum in the heart of Figueres is not merely a collection — it is a total work of art conceived, designed and obsessed over by Salvador Dalí himself. From the giant eggs crowning the rooftop to the rain-taxi in the courtyard, every corner is a controlled hallucination.
A Museum Like No Other
Built on the ruins of the Municipal Theatre where Dalí showed his first public exhibition as a teenager, the building is as theatrical as the man himself. The geodesic dome of golden colour dominates the Figueres skyline and draws you in before you even buy your ticket.
Inside, the Mae West Room tricks your eyes into seeing a Hollywood face from a mezzanine staircase, while the Palace of the Wind ceiling fresco makes the floor feel like it might dissolve beneath you. Dalí is also buried in the crypt directly below the stage — the ultimate final act.
Planning Your Visit
Arrive when the doors open at 9 am in summer to beat the tour-bus crowds; by 11 am the courtyard can feel genuinely packed. The night-time openings held on selected July and August evenings, with live music and cocktails, offer a completely different and more intimate atmosphere.
Combine your ticket with the Dalí Jewels collection displayed in the same building — the surrealist brooches and necklaces Dalí designed are surprisingly moving and often overlooked by visitors rushing for the paintings.
