Mercat Municipal de Figueres
Tucked behind the Rambla, Figueres' covered municipal market is where local chefs, grandmothers and curious travellers converge every morning to handle the best produce of the Alt Empordà plain. The smell of salt-cured anchovies and ripe tomatoes hits you at the door.
What to Buy and Taste
The Empordà is anchovy country, and the market stalls pile high with boquerones from L'Escala — arguably the finest salt-packed anchovies in the Mediterranean. Pick up a tin or a jar to take home, or eat them on the spot with a chunk of pa de pagès bread from the bakery stalls inside.
Local cheeses, cured meats from the Pyrenean foothills, and seasonal mushrooms (especially prized rovellons in autumn) fill the interior counters. The fruit and vegetable vendors outside sell tomatoes de penjar — small hanging tomatoes rubbed on bread to make the classic Catalan pa amb tomàquet.
Market Rhythm and Surroundings
The market is most alive Tuesday to Saturday from 8 am to 2 pm. Friday draws the largest crowd, when extra stalls spill onto the surrounding streets and farmers drive in from the countryside.
After shopping, the café bars immediately around the market serve a working breakfast of café amb llet and a croissant de mantequilla for well under €3 — one of the most honest-value meals in town.
