Mercat Municipal de Figueres
Tucked behind the Rambla in a handsome early-20th-century building, the Mercat Municipal is where the Alt Empordà region puts its best produce on display. Saffron-yellow saffron threads from local farms, legs of black-hoofed Iberian pig and wheels of creamy Empordà cheese crowd the stalls with beautiful, edible abundance.
What to Look For
The market is at its liveliest on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings when farmers from the surrounding Empordà plain bring in seasonal vegetables, wild mushrooms in autumn and the prized botifarra sausages that anchor so many Catalan recipes. Ask at the cheese stalls for a slice of mató, the fresh unsalted curd cheese traditionally drizzled with honey.
The fish section is a reminder that the Costa Brava is barely 30 km away — look for fresh anchovies from L'Escala, the town that has been salt-curing them since the 17th century. A jar of these anchovies makes one of the most authentic souvenirs you can carry home.
Eating In and Around the Market
Several bar-counters inside the market serve breakfast from around 7 am — a cortado and a croissant de mantequilla eaten standing at the bar among market workers is a quietly perfect Catalan morning ritual.
The streets immediately surrounding the market, particularly Carrer de la Jonquera, are lined with small delis and wine shops where you can stock up on Empordà DO wines, local olive oil and dried fruits to complete a picnic.
