Piazza dei Signori (Piazza Dante)
Stand in the middle of Piazza dei Signori and you are looking at seven centuries of Veronese power arranged around a single square. The Scaligeri ruled from here, the Venetians redecorated it to suit themselves, and in 1865 the city placed a three-metre Carrara marble Dante at the centre — because the poet spent seven years as a guest of Cangrande della Scala and the Veronese have not forgotten it.
The piazza goes by two names: Piazza dei Signori for the lords who shaped it, Piazza Dante for the statue that now anchors it. Either way, this is Verona's civic core — more composed and less photographed than the Arena, which suits it.

The story behind Piazza dei Signori (Piazza Dante)
The square took shape in the mid-1100s when the Commune of Verona consolidated tower-houses and surrounding land to build a seat of government. The Palazzo della Ragione went up at the end of the 12th century, its Torre dei Lamberti begun by the Lamberti family in 1172. When the Scaligeri became undisputed lords of Verona in the early 1300s, they moved their residence to a large crenellated palazzo facing the square — giving it the name it still carries.
Each subsequent power left its mark. Cansignorio della Scala probably completed the Palazzo del Capitano around 1363; Michele Sanmicheli designed its portal in 1533, modelled on the Arch of Gavi. After Venice took Verona in 1404, the Palazzo del Podestà gained a new entrance and a Lion of St. Mark above it. Fra Giocondo's Loggia del Consiglio, finished in 1476, remains one of the most considered Renaissance façades in northern Italy.

The piazza is open and walkable at any hour. The Achille Forti Gallery of Modern Art inside Palazzo della Ragione is worth checking for opening times before you visit. Torre dei Lamberti, at 88 metres Verona's tallest structure, has a lift — the view is a good orientation exercise on your first day.
Summer afternoons bring full sun and considerable heat; the surrounding buildings provide some shade by late afternoon. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for lingering in the square, while winter mornings can be sharp but leave the piazza almost entirely to yourself.

If Piazza delle Erbe is the bustling kitchen of Verona, Piazza dei Signori is its refined, formal living room. Dominating the center is the brooding statue of Dante Alighieri, turning his back on the fun of the market square. He lived here in exile for years under the protection of the Scaligeri family. It’s a favorite meeting spot—"Let's meet at Dante" is a standard phrase for locals.
A few summers ago, I walked around this piazza. Young, beautiful and heartbroken, I paced the streets in the warm mid-July air, aching with all of the hope and love my newly 22-year old form could possibly contain. I was waiting on a friend, whom I felt was the love of my life at the time, to meet me in Verona. It was far fetched of me to believe in it, there were a million variables and things in the way. Of course, he couldn’t come. Silly Americans, raised on romance movies and dreams of finding paradise, or love in Europe. Deliriously thinking we’ll find peace or escape or everything we’ve ever wanted on our annual 2 weeks off. For three nights, I walked around listening to music and smoking a few marlboros. Unable to rest, every thought in my mind orbiting solely around him. I was sitting in this piazza when suddenly, lightning struck overhead. Beautiful stabs of light across the dark sky over Dante’s statue. Such a majestic, otherworldly sight. The storm continued all night. I felt that the sky, (and Dante,) were sad with me.
