Sentiero degli Ulivi — Olive Grove Trail
Drop below Spello's walls on the Sentiero degli Ulivi and within minutes the town disappears behind a curtain of centuries-old olive trees whose gnarled silver trunks are registered heritage objects. This marked trail loops through working groves, wildflower meadows and Roman-era terracing for about 6 kilometres with minimal elevation change.
The Route
The trail begins at Porta Consolare and descends gently westward through private groves that have been continuously harvested since at least the medieval period. Numbered waymarkers keep you on track; the full loop returns to Spello via a country lane past a Romanesque chapel, Santa Maria di Vallegloria, which is occasionally open on weekend mornings.
In spring, the ground beneath the olives is carpeted with anemones, orchids and wild asparagus. In October and November the nets go out for harvest and you can watch — and sometimes help — local families collect the fruit by hand, a practice unchanged for generations.
Wildlife and Seasons
Hoopoes, green woodpeckers and short-toed treecreepers are regularly spotted along the trail in spring. The grove edge also shelters hares and, at dusk, barn owls hunting the meadow margins.
Summer walking is best done before 09:00 or after 17:00 to avoid midday heat. Autumn is the single best season: the light is golden, the air smells of pressed olives and the hills have turned every shade of ochre and rust.
