Belvedere di Porta Montanara
Climb to the northern edge of Spello's walls near the ancient Porta Montanara gate and the valley of Spoleto opens before you in a single, breathtaking frame. Olive groves, cypress rows and the silver thread of the Topino river stretch all the way to Assisi on the opposite hillside.
Best Time to Visit
The hour before sunset is transformative: the Assisi hillside turns amber, Monte Subasio goes violet and the plain below fills with a warm haze that photographers chase for years. Bring a wide-angle lens or simply stand still and absorb it.
Early morning in spring is equally rewarding when wildflowers carpet the terraces below the walls and the air smells of broom and rosemary. You are unlikely to share the spot with more than a handful of locals walking their dogs.
Getting There on Foot
From Piazza della Repubblica, follow Via Torri di Properzio uphill for about ten minutes, passing Roman-era tower remnants embedded in medieval walls. The route itself is a history lesson in stone.
The gate area is unwalled on one side, so step carefully near the edge. A worn stone bench just inside the arch makes a perfect perch for a picnic bought from the alimentari on Via Cavour below.
