Mercato Settimanale di Spello
Every Friday morning, Spello's weekly market spills along the lower streets near Piazza Kennedy, filling the air with the scent of black truffles, fresh pecorino and just-pressed olive oil. It is the most honest window into everyday Umbrian life you will find in any of the hill towns.
What to Buy
Local vendors sell Spello's celebrated extra-virgin olive oil — the town sits inside the DOP Umbria zone and the oil here is grassy and peppery in a way supermarket bottles never replicate. Small producers often bring unlabelled bottles; ask for a taste before you buy.
Black truffles from the Valnerina arrive wrapped in damp newspaper. Even a small 20-gram piece will perfume a risotto for four. Alongside them you will find dried porcini, lentils from Castelluccio and hand-rolled pasta from family producers.
Beyond the Food Stalls
The outer ring of stalls sells household goods, seasonal clothing and ceramics — useful for locals, entertaining for visitors. The ceramic tradition of Deruta is close enough that some vendors bring seconds and samples at steep discounts.
Plan to finish your market loop with a brioche and espresso at Bar Centrale on Piazza della Repubblica, where the locals debrief on the morning's best finds.
