Sóller Saturday Market, Plaça de la Constitució
Every Saturday morning the handsome Art Nouveau square in front of Sant Bartomeu church transforms into one of Mallorca's most atmospheric weekly markets, where local farmers set up stalls piled with blood oranges, Sóller lemons, artisan olive oil and hand-embroidered linen. It is genuinely local rather than tourist-facing, which means prices are fair and the produce is outstanding.
What to Buy and When to Arrive
Arrive before 10 am to beat the tour-group crowds and to find the widest selection of seasonal fruit and vegetables. The Sóller valley is famous throughout Spain for its citrus, and the small, intensely perfumed oranges sold here are a world away from supermarket alternatives.
Beyond fruit, look for stalls selling Mallorcan sobrassada (paprika-cured sausage), local honey, handmade ceramics and the distinctive ensaïmada pastries dusted with powdered sugar.
The Square Itself Is Half the Attraction
Plaça de la Constitució is framed by the Modernista façade of the Banco de Sóller (now CaixaBank) designed by a student of Antoni Gaudí, and the 17th-century church of Sant Bartomeu with its imposing Gothic rose window. Even without the market, the square rewards a long coffee at one of the terrace cafés.
After shopping, cross to Bar Turismo or Café Central for a cortado and a slice of coca de patata — the local sweet potato pastry that locals eat for breakfast on market day.
