Restaurant Sa Cova, Port de Sóller

Tucked into the western arc of Port de Sóller's horseshoe bay, Sa Cova is the kind of seafood restaurant that regulars guard like a secret — whitewashed walls, fishing nets as decor, and a kitchen that lets the day's catch do all the talking. The grilled red mullet (moll) and the locally caught prawns with garlic and olive oil are as good as anything you will eat in the Balearics.

What to Order

Start with the pan amb oli — thick slices of Mallorcan bread rubbed with ripe tomato and drizzled with local olive oil — then move to the arroz de peix, a soupy Mallorcan fish rice that is richer and more intensely flavoured than a standard paella. The kitchen makes it to order, so expect a 20-minute wait and consider it mandatory.

For mains, ask the waiter which fish came in that morning. Moll a la planxa (grilled red mullet) and fresh sea bass from the Tramuntana coast are the benchmarks; both are served simply with lemon and herbs to let the quality speak.

Setting and Booking

The restaurant's terrace sits almost at sea level on the bay, and on still evenings the water is close enough to hear. Arrive at sunset and the light on the surrounding mountains turns the whole scene amber.

Reservations are strongly recommended in July and August; in shoulder season you can often walk in for lunch. The restaurant is closed on Mondays outside peak season — always call ahead.
