GR221 Stage: Sóller to Deià via the Camí de Pedra en Sec
The stretch of the GR221 long-distance footpath linking Sóller to the artists' village of Deià is arguably the most beautiful 3-hour walk in Mallorca — a UNESCO-protected dry-stone trail that climbs through ancient terraced olive groves, passes a 13th-century watchtower and delivers you into one of the most painterly villages in the Mediterranean. No car can replicate it.
The Route and What You'll See
The trail leaves Sóller from the northern edge of town, climbing steadily through groves of gnarled thousand-year-old olive trees whose twisted trunks look like something from a fairy tale. At the high point near the Coll de Sóller you get a sweeping backward view of the valley and the port before the path descends through shaded forest toward Deià.
Look out for the Torre Picada Moorish watchtower above Sóller on the approach — it dates to the 16th century and was used to spot pirate raids from the sea. The path passes close enough for a short detour to the base.
Arriving in Deià
Deià itself is worth at least an hour of wandering: the honey-stone village clings to a hillside above the sea and has attracted artists and writers since Robert Graves made it his home in 1929. His house, Ca N'Alluny, is now a museum open to the public.
For the return, the bus line 210 connects Deià to Sóller several times daily, so there is no need to retrace your steps — a one-way walk followed by a scenic bus ride is the perfect loop.
