Riu de Santa Eulària Riverside Walk
The Riu de Santa Eulària is the only permanent river in the entire Balearic Islands, and the shaded path that follows its final two kilometres to the sea is one of the most unexpectedly lush walks on Ibiza. Reed beds, fig trees, herons and dragonflies line the banks — a genuine counterpoint to the island's beach-and-nightclub reputation.
Walking the River Path
The most rewarding stretch begins at the old stone bridge on the Carretera de Sant Carles (the road north out of town) and follows the eastern bank downstream through a corridor of tamarisk, oleander and giant reeds to the river mouth beside the marina. The flat, easy path takes about 25 minutes one way and is suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs for most of its length.
Early morning is the best time for birdwatching: little egrets, grey herons and the occasional kingfisher work the shallows, while hoopoes probe the grassy margins. The reed beds also shelter Cetti's warblers, heard far more often than they are seen.
The River Mouth and Marina
Where the river meets the sea beside the marina, a small sandy delta forms a calm, shallow lagoon that is ideal for paddling children. The contrast between the green riverine vegetation and the sparkling blue of the bay just beyond creates one of the most photogenic natural compositions in the municipality.
The riverside path connects directly to the Passeig de s'Alamera, the town's elegant palm-lined promenade, making it easy to combine the walk with breakfast at one of the promenade cafés afterwards. The whole circuit from the old bridge to the marina and back along the promenade is comfortably done in under 90 minutes.
