Restaurant Es Terral

Tucked on a quiet backstreet just off the main promenade, Es Terral has built a loyal following among locals and returning visitors for its honest, ingredient-led Ibizan cooking — think sofrit pagès (the island's hearty meat-and-potato stew), grilled catch of the day and house-made almond ice cream. No celebrity chef, no design theatre, just excellent food at fair prices.

What to Order

Start with the buñuelos de bacallà — salt-cod fritters served with a roasted pepper aioli that is made fresh each morning. The sofrit pagès is the definitive version of this traditional shepherd's dish: slow-cooked lamb and chicken with potatoes, sobrasada and spices, rich enough to be a meal on its own but usually shared as a starter between two.

For the main course, ask the waiter what came off the fishing boats that morning. The grilled dorada (gilt-head bream) and the dentex are both regularly outstanding, dressed with nothing more than good olive oil, lemon and sea salt. The wine list leans heavily on Spanish bottles with several Ibizan labels worth trying.

The Setting and When to Go

The dining room opens onto a small terrace shaded by a mature fig tree — arrive early to secure one of the six outdoor tables, which are booked out by 20:30 most summer evenings. The interior is simply decorated with terracotta tiles and vintage Ibizan farming tools on the walls, warm and unpretentious.

Lunch is the best-value window: the weekday menú del día offers two courses, bread, wine and dessert for around €16 — a genuinely exceptional deal for this quality of cooking. Book ahead for dinner in July and August.
