Church of Santa Eulària des Riu

Perched on the Puig de Missa hill and visible from almost everywhere in town, this whitewashed 16th-century fortified church is the most photographed landmark in Santa Eulària. The short climb rewards you with cool stone interiors, a tiny ethnographic museum, and a panorama that stretches across rooftops to the sea.

A Church Built to Survive

Completed around 1568, the Església de Puig de Missa was designed as much for defence as for worship — its thick walls and elevated position allowed villagers to shelter from pirate raids that plagued the Ibizan coast for centuries. Step inside and the stark whitewashed nave feels almost cave-like, a deliberate contrast to the blazing Mediterranean light outside.

The small cemetery wrapping around the church is one of the most atmospheric spots on the island, with simple iron crosses and bougainvillea spilling over old stone walls. It is still an active parish, so check the noticeboard for occasional evening mass times if you want to experience it as a living place of worship.

The View and the Village Museum

From the hilltop terrace you can trace the silver ribbon of the Riu de Santa Eulària — Ibiza's only river — threading through the plain below, a view that has barely changed in centuries. On a clear morning the silhouette of Formentera floats on the horizon to the south.

The Museu Etnogràfic de Ibiza occupies a traditional payesa farmhouse just beside the church and displays antique linen presses, olive-oil equipment and Ibizan gold jewellery. It is small enough to see in 30 minutes but genuinely illuminating about rural island life before tourism arrived.
