Ribérac Friday Market
Every Friday morning the sleepy town square of Ribérac erupts into one of the Dordogne's most celebrated weekly markets, drawing farmers, cheese-makers and truffle hunters from across the Périgord Blanc. Locals and expats alike jostle for the best walnuts, foie gras and seasonal produce under a canopy of plane trees.
What to buy and taste
The market is famous for its raw-milk cheeses, particularly the creamy Cabécou goat rounds sold directly by small-farm producers from the surrounding hills. Look for vendors selling confits de canard sealed in old-fashioned glass jars — these make the most authentic edible souvenir you can carry home.
Walnut oil pressed in the Périgord Blanc is another unmissable purchase; a single bottle transforms a simple salad into something extraordinary. In autumn, do not be surprised to see a discreet table offering fresh black truffles — ask politely and the vendor will let you smell before you buy.
Atmosphere and timing
Arrive before 9 a.m. to catch the full spectacle: stall-holders setting out pyramids of golden mirabelle plums, bundles of dried lavender and hand-thrown pottery from local artisans. By 10 a.m. the café terraces on Place du Général de Gaulle are packed with regulars nursing their café crème and watching the theatre of commerce unfold.
The market winds down around noon, so plan your morning around it rather than after it. Pair your visit with a slow lunch at one of the brasseries on the square to extend the pleasure well into the afternoon.
