Dronne Valley Riverside Walk
The River Dronne curls gently around the edges of Ribérac, offering a flat, easy riverside walk that rewards you with mirror-still reflections of poplar trees, grazing white Charolais cattle and the occasional flash of a kingfisher. This is the Périgord Blanc at its most pastoral and unhurried — a world away from the more dramatic cliffs of the Vézère valley further south.
The walk itself
A well-marked footpath follows the Dronne from the town's old stone bridge southward for several kilometres, passing through water meadows thick with wildflowers in spring. The path is entirely flat and suitable for all fitness levels, making it ideal for a leisurely morning or a long evening stroll before dinner.
In summer the river is popular with local canoeists and you can watch them navigate the gentle meanders from the grassy banks. Several wooden picnic tables are positioned along the route — pack a baguette, some local cheese and a bottle of Bergerac rosé and you have the perfect Périgord afternoon.
Wildlife and seasons
The Dronne valley is a recognised habitat for grey herons, little egrets and otters, and patient walkers at dawn or dusk have a good chance of spotting all three. In May the riverbanks are carpeted with yellow flag irises and the air smells of wild mint crushed underfoot.
Autumn transforms the valley with amber and russet foliage, and morning mist rising off the water creates an almost cinematic atmosphere. Winter walks are quieter but equally rewarding — the bare willows reveal the river's true width and you often have the path entirely to yourself.
