Restaurant Le Chevillard, Ribérac

Tucked into the centre of Ribérac, Le Chevillard has earned a loyal following among locals and visiting food lovers for its unfussy, generous cooking rooted firmly in Périgord tradition. This is the place to eat a properly made confit de canard with sarladaise potatoes, followed by a walnut tart that tastes exactly as it should.

What to order

Start with a terrine de foie gras maison — the house version is silky, lightly seasoned and served with toasted pain de campagne and a small pot of fig chutney. The magret de canard, sourced from local farms, is consistently excellent: scored skin crisped to a lacquer, the flesh rosy and rich.

For dessert the tarte aux noix du Périgord is non-negotiable. Made with walnuts from the surrounding hills and a short pastry that shatters cleanly, it pairs beautifully with a small glass of Monbazillac dessert wine, which the restaurant stocks from a good local producer.

Atmosphere and booking

The dining room is unpretentious — checked tablecloths, a chalkboard menu that changes with the market and a wine list that sensibly focuses on Bergerac and Pécharmant appellations. Service is warm and genuinely knowledgeable about the food's provenance.

Booking is strongly advised on Friday lunchtimes when the market crowd descends, and throughout July and August. The fixed-price lunch menu offers remarkable value — three courses with a glass of local wine for a price that would buy you a sandwich in Paris.
