Panorama from the Ribérac Hillside Cemetery
Ribérac sits on a gentle rise above the Dronne plain, and the old cemetery on the hill above the town offers one of the most quietly rewarding viewpoints in the entire Périgord Blanc — a 180-degree sweep across a patchwork of sunflower fields, oak woodland and the silver thread of the Dronne far below. It costs nothing, requires no hiking and is almost always deserted.
The view and the light
The best time to visit is early morning, when mist fills the valley below and the fields emerge from it in slow motion as the sun climbs. In July the surrounding sunflower fields are at their peak and the view is an almost absurdly vivid yellow-and-green tapestry stretching to the horizon.
Looking north-west on a clear day you can pick out the distinctive water towers and church spires of several Périgord Blanc villages — a useful orientation exercise before setting out to explore the region's back roads. The cemetery itself is well-maintained and typical of rural French burial grounds, with elaborate family tombs and ceramic flower arrangements that have their own quiet charm.
Getting there and combining with other sights
The cemetery is reached by following the Rue du Cimetière uphill from the town centre — a five-minute walk from the market square. There is a small pull-in area for cars if you prefer to drive.
Combine the viewpoint with the Collégiale Notre-Dame de Ribérac, which is visible from the hill and only a few minutes' walk back down into town. The walk up and back takes no more than 20 minutes, making it a perfect start or end to a morning in Ribérac.
