Château de Bourdeilles
Just 18 kilometres south-east of Ribérac along the Dronne valley, the village of Bourdeilles conceals one of the Dordogne's most spectacular and least-crowded medieval sites: two châteaux standing side by side on a rocky promontory above the river — a fortified medieval keep and an elegant Renaissance palace begun for Catherine de Médicis. The two châteaux
The medieval tower dates from the 13th century and offers a vertiginous climb rewarded by a panoramic view over the Dronne valley and the village's old watermill below. The Renaissance château next door was commissioned in the 16th century and houses a remarkable collection of period furniture, including a gilded bedroom suite said to have been prepared for a royal visit that never came.
Both buildings are managed by the Dordogne Département and are open to visitors with a single ticket. The interiors are surprisingly intimate — none of the rope-off-everything museum atmosphere you find at more famous sites — and the guides are genuinely enthusiastic about the history.
The village and surroundings
Bourdeilles village itself is achingly pretty: a cluster of honey-coloured stone houses tumbling down to the Dronne, with a medieval bridge that frames the château perfectly for photographs. A small café by the bridge serves cold drinks and simple lunches in summer.
The drive from Ribérac along the D1 follows the Dronne closely and is itself one of the most scenic short routes in the Périgord Blanc — plan to stop at least once to walk down to the riverbank.
