Sentiero degli Dei Approach from Ravello via Scala
Most hikers join the famous Path of the Gods at Bomerano above Positano, but the less-visited eastern approach through the ancient village of Scala — Ravello's tiny hilltop neighbour — offers the same spectacular ridge-top scenery with a fraction of the foot traffic and the bonus of passing through one of the oldest settlements on the entire coast.
The Route
From Ravello's Piazza Duomo, a signed path descends briefly before climbing to Scala, whose cathedral contains a 12th-century pulpit with inlaid cosmati mosaic work that would stop traffic in any major city but here sits quietly in a half-lit nave with no queue.
From Scala the trail continues west along the ridge of the Lattari Mountains, with the sea visible on both sides — the Gulf of Salerno to the south, the Gulf of Naples shimmering to the north — before connecting with the main Sentiero degli Dei route near Nocelle.
Practical Notes
The full Ravello–Scala–Nocelle route covers roughly 12 km and takes 4–5 hours at a relaxed pace; it is rated moderate with some steep stone stairways. Sturdy shoes are essential — the path is uneven and can be slippery after rain.
Carry water from Ravello as there are no reliable sources on the ridge. The reward at Nocelle is a cold Nastro Azzurro at Bar Ristorante Santa Croce and a SITA bus back down to Positano, from where ferries return to Amalfi and Salerno.
