Ravello Festival Open-Air Concert
Every summer from late June through September, the Ravello Festival transforms the clifftop gardens of Villa Rufolo into one of the world's most dramatically sited concert stages — a stone platform with the entire Amalfi Coast as its backdrop, where world-class orchestras, chamber ensembles and solo artists perform as the sun sets and the sea below turns violet.
The Programme
The festival was founded in 1953 and has hosted Leonard Bernstein, Mstislav Rostropovich and Riccardo Muti among its conductors. Today it runs a broad programme spanning classical orchestral concerts, chamber music, contemporary dance and occasional jazz evenings — the full schedule is published each spring at ravellofestival.com.
The Wagner Concert, held annually in late July to honour the composer's 1880 visit, is the festival's centrepiece and the hardest ticket to obtain. Book the moment the programme goes live, typically in April.
The Experience
Arrive 30 minutes early to walk the garden terraces before the performance — the light at that hour, with the coast below turning amber and the first stars appearing above the stage, is worth the ticket price alone.
Dress in a light layer even in August: the cliff catches a sea breeze after dark that can be surprisingly cool. After the concert, the village's bars and restaurants stay open late and the mood in Ravello's lanes is genuinely festive — locals and visitors share tables and the evening stretches comfortably toward midnight.
