Restaurante La Barcaza
La Barcaza is the kind of unpretentious harbour restaurant that locals guard jealously — a short walk from Puerto del Rosario's fishing quay, it serves whatever came off the boats that morning, grilled over charcoal with nothing more than sea salt, mojo and a basket of papas arrugadas. It is the definitive Fuerteventura lunch.
What to order
The vieja a la espalda — parrotfish butterflied and grilled skin-side down — is the dish to order if it is on the board. Its sweet, firm flesh needs no embellishment beyond a spoonful of mojo verde.
Start with a plate of mejillones (mussels) steamed with white wine and local herbs, or the caldo de pescado, a brothy fish soup that is the Canarian answer to bouillabaisse.
House wine is a serviceable Lanzarote malvasía served cold in a ceramic jug — order it without overthinking.
The experience
The dining room is simple: tiled floors, paper tablecloths, a blackboard menu that changes daily. The terrace faces the working harbour where you can watch fishing boats unload while you eat — it does not get more farm-to-table than this.
Lunch service runs roughly 13:00–16:00 and the restaurant fills quickly with port workers and local families; arrive at 13:00 or book ahead by phone.
