Streets worth wandering
Calle León y Castillo is the neighbourhood's spine — lined with small cafés, artisan shops and the occasional gallery spilling onto the pavement.
The parish church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario, rebuilt in the 19th century, anchors the main plaza and its bell tower is the city's most recognisable silhouette against a blue sky.
Look for the hand-painted ceramic street signs and the scattered bronze sculptures that are part of the city's open-air art project — there are over 100 pieces dotted around Puerto del Rosario.
Best time to explore
Early morning is ideal for photography: the low Atlantic light catches the ochre and white façades before the cruise-ship crowds arrive.
On Sunday afternoons the plaza fills with families and the café terraces do a roaring trade in cortados and papas arrugadas — join in rather than rushing on.
