Mercado Municipal de Puerto del Rosario
The city's covered municipal market on Calle Primero de Mayo is where Fuerteventura's legendary goat-farming culture meets daily life — stalls overflow with local queso majorero, just-caught Atlantic fish, wrinkled Canarian potatoes and tropical fruit. It is the most honest snapshot of what islanders actually eat.
What to buy and taste
Queso majorero — a PDO-protected goat's cheese that is Fuerteventura's most famous export — appears in every stage of maturity here, from creamy fresh wheels to paprika-rubbed aged rounds. Buy a vacuum-packed wedge to take home.
The fish counter changes daily but expect cherne (wreckfish), vieja (parrotfish) and fresh tuna landed at the nearby Puerto del Rosario harbour — ask the fishmonger to recommend the catch of the morning.
A handful of stalls sell mojo rojo and mojo verde in jars made to family recipes; these make far better souvenirs than anything sold near the beach resorts.
How to make the most of market morning
Arrive between 08:00 and 10:00 on a weekday for the fullest stalls and the most animated atmosphere — by noon many vendors are packing up.
The small bar inside the market serves breakfast: a toasted roll with local butter and honey (miel de palma) costs under two euros and is one of the best-value bites on the island.
