Playa de los Pozos (Pozo Negro Road Beaches)
Just 15 km south of Puerto del Rosario along the FV-20, a string of small dark-sand coves backed by black volcanic cliffs sits almost entirely unvisited — these are the beaches the package-holiday brochures never show. Bring your own water, a snorkel and an afternoon with nowhere to be.
What makes it special
The contrast between the jet-black volcanic sand, the electric-turquoise Atlantic and the rust-red cliffs is visually arresting in a way that the white-sand resort beaches simply cannot match.
The water is clear and relatively sheltered in the morning; snorkelling around the rocky outcrops reveals parrotfish, damselfish and the occasional octopus tucked into crevices.
Because there are no sunbed operators, beach bars or signposted car parks, the coves attract almost exclusively local fishermen and a handful of in-the-know windsurfers.
Getting there and practicalities
Take the FV-20 south from Puerto del Rosario toward Pozo Negro village and look for unsigned dirt tracks heading west toward the coast — a standard hire car handles them fine in dry conditions.
Bring everything you need: there is no shade, no fresh water and no facilities. A 3-litre water supply, reef shoes and high-factor sunscreen are non-negotiable in summer.
The best swimming window is 09:00–12:00 before the afternoon trade winds arrive and kick up chop.
