Sierra de Irta Natural Park
Immediately north of Peñíscola lies the Sierra de Irta, a 12,000-hectare coastal nature reserve that is one of the last truly wild stretches of Mediterranean coastline in Spain — no hotels, no beach bars, just limestone ridges, rosemary scrub and hidden coves of crystalline water.
Hiking the Coastal Trail
The park's star route is the PR-CV 318 coastal path, which hugs the clifftops from the hamlet of Peñíscola's northern beach all the way to Alcossebre, roughly 25 km south to north. Most visitors tackle the first 8 km section from the Peñíscola end to the Torre del Rey watchtower, a moderate hike with dramatic sea views and several spots to scramble down to empty pebble coves.
The path passes the ruins of the Castillo de Irta, a medieval watchtower perched on the highest point of the sierra at 571 metres. The ascent adds a stiff 45-minute detour from the coastal path but rewards with views stretching from the Ebro Delta to the Columbretes Islands.
Wildlife and Swimming Spots
The sierra is home to Bonelli's eagles, peregrine falcons and a healthy population of Hermann's tortoises. Spring (April–May) brings carpets of wild thyme, lavender and cistus in bloom, and the coastal scrub fills with migrating warblers. Birdwatchers should bring binoculars and walk the path early in the morning.
The best swimming coves are Cala Aiguaoliva and Cala Irta — both accessible on foot from the trail, with clear turquoise water over pebbles and rock. Neither has any facilities, so carry water, snacks and sun protection.
Access and Practical Advice
The easiest entry point from Peñíscola is the signed trailhead at the northern end of Playa Norte, reachable on foot from the old town in about 20 minutes. A free car park sits at the trailhead; it fills by 9 am on summer weekends, so arrive early or walk from town.
The park has no visitor centre in Peñíscola itself; download the Wikiloc app and search 'Sierra de Irta' for GPS tracks before you go. The terrain is rocky and exposed — sturdy shoes, two litres of water per person and sun cream are essential even for the shorter sections.
