Cala Mosques (Playa de les Mosques)
Most visitors never find Cala Mosques — a narrow, sheltered cove wedged between the base of Peñíscola's sea walls and a natural rock breakwater, accessible only on foot through the old town. The reward for finding it is a small beach of coarse golden sand, water so clear it looks photoshopped, and a view straight up at the castle looming overhead.
Finding the Cove
From Plaza de Armas inside the old town, take the steep lane that descends toward the sea on the southern (Playa Sur) side of the promontory. Near the base of the walls, a narrow gap in the rock — barely signed — leads down a rough path to the cove. The whole descent takes about five minutes but requires care on wet rock.
The cove faces south-southeast, which means it catches morning sun and is shaded by the castle walls in the late afternoon — ideal for a post-lunch swim when the main beaches are at their most crowded and hottest.
What Makes It Special
Cala Mosques holds perhaps 30–40 people comfortably, which means it never feels crowded even in August — a minor miracle on the Costa del Azahar. The water is exceptionally clear because the rock walls on either side shelter it from the open sea current, and there is no runoff from the beach promenade above.
Bring a mask and snorkel: the rocky edges of the cove are home to sea urchins, wrasse and the occasional octopus tucked into crevices. The castle walls rising directly above you, reflected in the water, make for an extraordinary visual.
Practicalities
There are no facilities whatsoever — no sunbed hire, no bar, no lifeguard. Bring everything you need from the old town above. The path down is not suitable for young children without supervision or for anyone with limited mobility.
The cove is best visited on a weekday morning in summer, or at any time in May, June or September when it is often entirely empty. Local teenagers tend to claim it on summer afternoons, so mornings are the sweet spot for a peaceful swim.
