Restaurant La Olla (Peñíscola)

Tucked into the new town a short walk from the beach, La Olla has been serving the definitive local rice dish — arròs a banda — since the 1980s, using fish bought that morning from the Peñíscola fish market. This is the place locals send visiting family when they want to show off what the Costa del Azahar actually tastes like.

The Star Dish

Arròs a banda is the fishermen's rice of the Valencian north coast: short-grain rice cooked slowly in a rich, deep-brown fish broth made from scorpionfish, monkfish and whatever the fleet brought in that day. It arrives at the table in a traditional paella pan, with a separate bowl of the poached fish and a ramekin of all-i-oli on the side — simple, honest and deeply satisfying.

La Olla's version is finished in a wood-fired oven, giving the bottom layer of rice a crisp, caramelised socarrat — the most prized part of any Valencian rice dish. Order for a minimum of two people; the portion is generous.

Other Dishes Worth Ordering

Start with the clóchinas (Valencia's small, intensely flavoured mussels, steamed with white wine and bay leaf) or a plate of locally caught red prawns from Vinaròs — sweeter and more delicate than their Denia cousins. The kitchen also does a fine caldero, a thicker, soupier rice alternative popular among older locals.

For dessert, ask for the homemade crema catalana with a glass of chilled Moscatel de Alejandría from a local producer — the floral, honeyed wine cuts perfectly through the richness of the rice.

Booking and Timing

La Olla is popular year-round with Spanish families and should be booked at least two days ahead in July and August, and on any Sunday throughout the year. Lunch (2–4 pm) is the main event; the kitchen is at its best then, and the dining room fills with the sound of Spanish family lunches in full, joyful flow.

The restaurant closes on Monday and for a period in winter — call ahead or check their Facebook page for current hours before making a special trip.
