Mirador del Castillo Terrace (Upper Castle Battlements)
The highest accessible terrace of Peñíscola Castle is the finest natural viewpoint on the entire Costa del Azahar, offering an unbroken 360-degree panorama that sweeps from the Sierra de Irta nature reserve to the north, across open Mediterranean, and south toward the rice paddies of the Ebro Delta.
The View Itself
Standing on the upper battlements you can see both of Peñíscola's long sandy beaches — Playa Norte and Playa Sur — curving away from the rocky isthmus like two golden arms. On clear days the Columbretes Islands, a volcanic archipelago 56 km offshore and a protected marine reserve, are visible as faint dark dots on the horizon.
To the north, the rugged limestone cliffs of the Sierra de Irta tumble straight into the sea, completely undeveloped — a rare sight on the Spanish Mediterranean coast. The contrast between wild sierra and resort town is striking from this height.
Photography Tips
The terrace faces west over the old town rooftops toward the mainland, making it ideal for sunset shots. Arrive 30–40 minutes before sunset and position yourself on the northwest corner of the battlements for a composition that includes the castle walls, the terrace below and the darkening sky.
For the classic postcard shot of the castle from outside — rather than the view from it — walk to the far southern end of Playa Sur at low tide. From there the entire promontory, castle included, reflects in the wet sand at golden hour.
Combining the Visit
The terrace is included in the standard castle admission, so there is no extra cost. After descending, follow the Paseo de Ronda around the base of the walls for a ground-level perspective that shows the sheer scale of the rock the fortress sits on.
On summer evenings the castle sometimes hosts open-air concerts and theatrical performances in its courtyard — check the Peñíscola cultural programme for dates, as these events let you experience the terrace in an entirely different, magical light.
