Quartier du Hédas
Tucked into a narrow ravine that slices beneath the château plateau, the Hédas quarter is the oldest and most atmospheric corner of Pau — a steep tangle of medieval lanes, half-timbered houses and ivy-clad staircases that most visitors walk straight past on their way to the château above. By night it transforms into the city's liveliest bar district.
A Ravine Full of History
The Hédas stream once powered tanneries and mills at the bottom of this natural gorge; today the water runs underground but the topography remains, creating a sunken world that feels completely separate from the orderly 19th-century city above.
Look for the Escalier de la Monnaie, a worn stone staircase that connects the ravine floor to the château esplanade — it was the route servants and merchants used for centuries and still offers one of the most dramatic up-close views of the château walls.
Bars, Terraces and Night Life
By evening the Hédas fills with students and locals spilling out of craft-beer bars, tapas spots and live-music venues; the narrow lane of rue du Hédas is essentially one long terrace on warm nights.
Don't miss the street art that decorates the retaining walls — the ravine has become an unofficial open-air gallery with murals commissioned by the city, making it photogenic at any hour.
