The Lac de Bious-Artigues Loop
The most accessible and photogenic introduction to the valley is the 7-km circular trail around Lac de Bious-Artigues (1,422 m), starting from the car park at the same name off the D934 road near Gabas. The flat lakeside section gives a mirror-perfect reflection of the Pic du Midi d'Ossau and requires no technical ability.
The full loop, which climbs gently to a second viewpoint above the lake, takes 2–3 hours at a relaxed pace and passes through beech forest, alpine meadow and rocky outcrops where izard (Pyrenean chamois) are regularly spotted.
Wildlife and When to Visit
The Ossau valley holds one of Europe's densest populations of griffon vultures; scan the thermals above the cliff faces between the Pont de Camps and the Cirque d'Anéou for their distinctive flat-winged soaring silhouette — sightings are almost guaranteed between April and October.
Late June and early July bring an extraordinary wildflower bloom across the high meadows — gentians, orchids and martagon lilies — while October turns the beech forests copper and gold, making it arguably the most beautiful month of all.
