Victor Hugo called it the most beautiful promenade in the world, and the 1.8-kilometre clifftop boulevard des Pyrénées still earns that hyperbole on a clear winter morning when the full Pyrénées chain — from Pic du Midi d'Ossau to Pic du Midi de Bigorre — stretches across the horizon like a painted backdrop. No cable car or mountain hike required: the view is free and flat.

On a crisp day between November and April, you can identify more than 80 named peaks from the iron railings, with the snow-capped Pic du Midi d'Ossau's distinctive twin-horned silhouette acting as the unmistakable centrepiece.

When and How to Enjoy It
Locals treat the boulevard as a living room: old men play pétanque under the plane trees at the western end, joggers loop past at dawn, and café terraces at the eastern end near place Royale fill with aperitif crowds at dusk.
