Palacio Real de Olite

Rising above the terracotta rooftops of Olite like something conjured from a medieval romance, the Royal Palace of Olite is one of the most spectacular Gothic castles in all of Spain. Its forest of towers, hanging gardens and honey-coloured turrets make it the undisputed star of the Navarrese meseta.

A Royal Residence Like No Other

Built for King Charles III of Navarre in the early 15th century, the palace was once draped in exotic animals, perfumed gardens and gilded chambers — a Versailles of the Middle Ages long before Versailles existed.

Wander through the Torre del Homenaje, climb the spiral staircases and peer from the battlements over a patchwork of vineyards stretching to the horizon. Every angle of this castle delivers a postcard moment.

Practical Tips for Your Visit

The palace is connected by a covered walkway to the older Castillo Viejo next door, and a combined ticket gets you into both. Allow at least 90 minutes to do the complex justice without rushing.

Visit on a weekday morning in spring or autumn to beat the tour groups and catch the warm Navarrese light flooding through the narrow lancet windows.
