Iglesia de Santa María la Real
Standing in the shadow of the famous castle, the 13th-century church of Santa María la Real is routinely overlooked by visitors rushing between towers — which is precisely why you should seek it out. Its carved Romanesque-Gothic portal is one of the finest pieces of medieval stonework in Navarre, and the hushed interior hides polychrome altarpieces of startling beauty.
The Portal That Stops You Cold
The western doorway is a layered arch of carved apostles, angels and foliate capitals that art historians compare favourably with the great portals of Burgos Cathedral. The stone retains traces of original polychrome paint if you look closely in raking light.
Because the church sits on a quieter street behind the main tourist flow, you can often stand before this portal in complete silence — a meditative experience that the castle, for all its grandeur, rarely offers.
Inside the Church
The nave is Gothic simplicity at its most affecting: bare stone, soaring ribs and a retablo mayor (main altarpiece) blazing with gilded Gothic panels depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin.
The church also houses the image of the Virgen de Olite, patroness of the town, which is carried through the streets during the September fiestas. Ask the sacristan about the festival if you want to understand what Olite means to its people.
