Mercado Municipal de Olite
Every Saturday morning the covered Mercado Municipal on Calle Tudela comes alive with the flavours that define Navarrese cooking: fat white asparagus from the Ebro valley, piquillo peppers glistening like lacquered jewels, local sheep's cheese and rough-hewn loaves still warm from the oven.
What to Look For
April to June is the prime season for espárragos de Navarra — the white asparagus that locals treat with near-religious reverence. Stalls sell them graded by thickness; the fattest spears are the most prized and worth every cent.
Alongside the produce, small-batch wine producers from the Denominación de Origen Navarra set up occasional stalls where you can taste before you buy. Pick up a bottle of Tempranillo or a pale Garnacha rosado to carry back to your accommodation.
How to Shop Like a Local
Arrive before 10:00 to get the best selection and to watch the town's cooks do their weekly shop — it is a sociable, unhurried ritual that tells you more about daily life in Olite than any guidebook.
Most vendors speak only Spanish; a few words of courtesy go a long way. Bring a tote bag, small coins and an appetite for impromptu tastings.
