Pointe de Nyon
Ride the Télécabine de Nyon to 2,019 metres and you're rewarded with a sweeping 360-degree arc that takes in Mont Blanc, the Aravis range and the Dents du Midi — all in one breathless glance. On a clear morning the valleys below fill with cotton-wool mist while the peaks glow pink in the early light.
The View Itself
From the summit terrace you can pick out the unmistakable white dome of Mont Blanc to the south-east, the jagged Dents du Midi to the north-west, and on exceptional days even the Jura plateau beyond Lake Geneva. Bring binoculars and you'll spot chamois grazing the rocky couloirs below the lift station.
The panorama changes personality completely with the seasons: in winter it's a monochrome world of groomed pistes and frosted larches, while in summer wildflower meadows of gentian and arnica carpet the slopes in vivid yellow and violet.
Getting Up There
The Télécabine de Nyon departs from the edge of Morzine village and runs in both winter and summer seasons, making this accessible even for non-skiers and non-hikers. The ride takes around eight minutes and the cabin is large enough for pushchairs and bike carriers in summer.
Once at the top, the Refuge de Nyon serves hearty tartiflette and vin chaud just steps from the viewing terrace — so you can warm your hands and your appetite simultaneously.
Best Timing
Arrive before 9 am in summer to beat tour groups and catch the golden-hour light raking across the Chablais peaks. In winter, the first gondola at 8:30 am gives you untracked corduroy pistes on the Nyon sector before the crowds arrive.
September is arguably the finest month: the air is crystalline after summer storms, the crowds have thinned, and the larches are just beginning to turn amber.
