Chapelle de Zore

Most visitors to Morzine never venture to the Chapelle de Zore, a small 17th-century stone chapel perched on a grassy knoll above the hamlet of Les Prodains with views that rival anything the ski lifts charge you to see. The walk from Morzine takes under two hours and the sense of peaceful discovery when you arrive is genuinely special.

The Walk Up

The trail begins at the Les Prodains lift base station and climbs steadily through mixed forest before breaking out onto open pasture at around 1,200 metres. The path is well-trodden by local walkers but rarely appears on tourist maps, which keeps the crowds away.

In June the meadows on the approach are thick with orchids, yellow rattle and the nodding heads of mountain clover. Cowbells from the summer herds echo off the surrounding cliffs and the air smells of warm grass and pine resin.

The Chapel Itself

The Chapelle de Zore is a simple, single-nave structure with a small bell tower and a carved wooden door that is usually unlocked during daylight hours. Inside, votive candles and hand-written prayers left by local farming families give it an atmosphere of quiet, lived-in faith that larger churches rarely achieve.

The stone bench outside the chapel faces directly towards the Dents Blanches and makes an ideal lunch spot — unpack your market cheese and bread here and you'll feel like the luckiest person in the Alps.

Combining with a Longer Loop

From the chapel you can continue on a signed trail to the Lac des Mines d'Or — a small, photogenic tarn named after a long-abandoned gold-mining operation — and loop back to Morzine via the Nyon sector, making a satisfying four-hour circuit.

The Lac des Mines d'Or trail is snow-free from late June and the tarn reflects the surrounding peaks with mirror-like clarity on windless mornings.
