La Chamade

Tucked into the ground floor of a chalet on Rue du Bourg, La Chamade has been serving the definitive versions of Savoyard classics since the 1970s and shows absolutely no sign of updating its winning formula. The fondue Savoyarde here — a blend of Beaufort, Comté and Emmental — is the benchmark against which all others in the resort are judged.

What to Order

The fondue Savoyarde for two arrives in a glazed earthenware caquelon over a steady flame, accompanied by a basket of crusty bread cubes and a small dish of cornichons and pickled onions. Resist the urge to order anything else on the first visit — this dish alone justifies the reservation.

If you're coming in winter and want something even more indulgent, the raclette is served table-side on a traditional half-wheel of cheese held under a small grill, scraped directly onto your plate of boiled potatoes, charcuterie and pickles.

The Room & The Vibe

The dining room is everything a mountain restaurant should be: low ceilings, exposed pine beams darkened by decades of fondue steam, cowbells on the wall and candles jammed into old wine bottles. It seats perhaps 40 covers and fills up completely every evening from mid-December to late April.

Service is run by the same family that has owned the place for generations — expect warmth and gentle ribbing in equal measure, especially if you drop your bread in the fondue (tradition demands you buy a round of drinks).

Booking & Practicalities

Reservations are essential in ski season and strongly advised in summer. Walk-ins occasionally get lucky at lunch on weekdays in July and August when the lunchtime trade is lighter.

The wine list leans heavily on Savoie appellations — a carafe of Apremont or Chignin-Bergeron is the correct accompaniment to any melted-cheese dish and costs around €18–22 for 50 cl.
