Minori's Roman Villa Marittima (10 min from Maiori)
A ten-minute walk or two-minute bus ride east of Maiori sits one of the most remarkably preserved Roman maritime villas in southern Italy — and almost nobody outside the immediate area seems to know it exists. The Villa Marittima in Minori dates to the 1st century AD and its underground rooms, frescoed walls and mosaic floors sit directly beneath the modern town.
What Survives
The excavated sections include a large triclinium (dining hall), a cryptoporticus (covered walkway), a bath suite with intact hypocaust heating channels, and a garden area that has been replanted to reflect Roman horticultural tastes. The frescoes, in the vivid reds and ochres of the Second Pompeian Style, are astonishingly well-preserved given that the villa was buried and forgotten for over a millennium.
An attached antiquarium displays finds from the site including amphorae, glass vessels, bronze fittings and marble sculpture fragments. The interpretive panels are in Italian and English and give a clear picture of how a wealthy Roman family would have used this coastal retreat.
Why It Matters for Maiori Visitors
The villa is the closest major Roman site to Maiori and is almost always quiet — even in August you are unlikely to share it with more than a handful of other visitors, a striking contrast to Pompeii's crowds. The combination of archaeological depth and coastal setting (the sea is literally 50 metres from the entrance) is unique.
Pair a morning visit to the villa with lunch at one of Minori's harbour-front restaurants — the town is equally quieter and cheaper than its more famous neighbours — then walk back to Maiori along the coast path via Torre Mezzacapo for a perfect half-day loop.
