Ski the 3Tre Canalone Miramonti — Campiglio's Legendary Black Run
Every December the Canalone Miramonti hosts the Audi FIS Alpine Ski World Cup 3Tre slalom — one of the most televised nights in ski racing. For the other 364 days of the season, the same steep, narrow couloir is open to the public, offering 1,000 metres of vertical descent on one of the most exhilarating black runs in the Dolomites.
The Run Itself
Starting from the Groste plateau at 2,437 m, the Canalone drops through a series of tight, banked turns cut into the north-facing couloir before spilling onto the wide Miramonti piste and finishing in the village at 1,522 m. The pitch averages 35 degrees at its steepest and holds its snow exceptionally well thanks to the north aspect and the resort's snowmaking infrastructure.
The run is best skied mid-morning after the piste-bashers have finished their work and before the afternoon softening. On powder days after a fresh snowfall, the sides of the couloir hold untracked snow for surprisingly long — local guides know the best entry points for off-piste lines that rejoin the piste lower down.
The World Cup Night Race Experience
If you can time your visit to coincide with the 3Tre World Cup (usually the second week of December), book a spot in the grandstand at the finish arena in Piazza Righi. The night race atmosphere — floodlit slopes, pyrotechnics, 10,000 spectators and the world's best slalom racers carving turns at 60 km/h — is unlike any other sporting event in the Alps.
Tickets for the grandstand cost €25–40 and sell out within hours of going on sale in October. Free standing areas along the lower piste fence are available on the night but get extremely crowded. The after-race party in the village bars — particularly the iconic Bar Suisse on Via Dolomiti di Brenta — runs until 02:00 and is not for the faint-hearted.
