Every December, the central Piazza Righi transforms into one of the most atmospheric Christmas markets in the Italian Alps — wooden chalets draped in fir garlands, the smell of vin brulé drifting over fresh snow, and the Brenta Dolomites glowing white above the rooftops as a backdrop that no set designer could improve upon.
What to Buy and Taste
Local artisans set up around 30 stalls selling hand-carved wooden toys from the Val di Sole, hand-painted ceramics from Rovereto, beeswax candles scented with mountain herbs and Trentino grappa in hand-blown glass bottles. This is a genuinely local market — you will not find mass-produced imports here, as the Comune di Madonna di Campiglio vets every vendor for regional provenance.
Food stalls specialise in Trentino winter staples: thick slices of zelten (a dense spiced fruit bread eaten only at Christmas), smoked Mortandela della Val di Non sausage on crusty bread, and roasted chestnuts served in paper cones. A cup of vin brulé made with Teroldego Rotaliano red wine costs €3–4 and is the correct thing to hold at all times.
The Setting and Atmosphere
The market runs through the first three weekends of December, traditionally closing just before the 20th. Evening visits are the most magical — the chalets are lit by warm Edison bulbs, the ski slopes above are illuminated for night skiing, and local choirs perform in the piazza on weekend evenings from 18:00.
