Lago Nambino and Its Floating Boathouse
A 40-minute forest walk west of the village centre — or a 15-minute snowshoe in winter — brings you to Lago Nambino, a small glacial lake at 1,768 m ringed by silver firs and reflected Dolomite peaks. It is one of the least-visited beautiful spots in the entire Campiglio basin, largely because it appears on no ski-lift map.
The Walk and the Lake
The trail (Sentiero 212) begins at the Nambino chairlift base station and climbs gently through old-growth forest, crossing two wooden bridges over the Nambino stream before emerging at the lake's grassy southern shore. The water is extraordinarily clear and, in late June, still cold enough to contain patches of floating ice at the edges.
A small wooden boathouse and a handful of rowing boats moored to a jetty give the scene a fairy-tale quality that photographers love. The boats are available to rent from the Rifugio Lago Nambino (€8 per hour) from late June to mid-September — rowing to the lake's centre gives you a 360-degree mirror reflection of the surrounding peaks on calm mornings.
The Rifugio and Winter Snowshoeing
Rifugio Lago Nambino, a traditional stone-and-timber mountain hut on the northern shore, serves honest Trentino cooking — minestrone di montagna, strangolapreti (spinach dumplings) and a short but well-chosen list of local wines. The hut has eight simple double rooms if you want to wake up to the lake before day-trippers arrive.
In winter the same trail becomes a marked snowshoe route, lit by lanterns on Friday evenings for a guided 'moonlight snowshoe' experience organised by the local alpine guide association. The lake freezes solid enough for ice skating in January and February — locals bring their own skates and the scene is entirely unselfconscious and magical.
